Little Monsters

This series slowly evolved out of my sketchbooks as a coherent set of individual 'masks'. Heavily influenced by Shamanic masks of the American Northwest, they began as one or two attempts to emulate the iconic power of actual tribal masks at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Using the same compositions, I updated these ritualistic objects with modern emblems of power from air travel, architecture, casinos, advertising displays.

Viola Blue 1999 Oil on Canvas

Originally sketches for oil paintings (Viola Blue, 1999 and Double Yellow, 1998) and never exhibited or printed, they seem to have relevance to current work so I thought I'd show them here for the first time. The ideas behind them were influenced by a culture of conspiracy theories, technological phobias, hypochondria and other modern 'illnesses'.
